Grant
5418 - Optimizing PFAS Treatment Systems for Multi-contaminant Removal and Operational Benefits
Grant Information
Project Objectives
- Optimize per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) treatment trains for multi-contaminant removal: Evaluate and optimize PFAS treatment systems (e.g., granular activated carbon (GAC), ion exchange (IX), membranes, etc.) across surface water and groundwater sources to enhance simultaneous removal of co-contaminants while maintaining or improving PFAS removal efficiency and operational performance.
- Characterize pretreatment and oxidation tradeoffs: Assess the impact of unit processes upstream of PFAS treatment (e.g., coagulation, pH adjustment, filtration, oxidation, etc.) on PFAS adsorption capacity and kinetics, media fouling, disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursor transformation and removal, downstream biological stability, and identify potential health implications of finished water quality.
- Develop decision-support guidance for utilities: Establish practical, utility-friendly decision frameworks to guide treatment selection and operation, including evaluation of overall water quality impacts.
