Project Objectives

This project will identify and document the best practical treatment and operational strategies to minimize both regulated and unregulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) of health concern in distribution systems, with the goal of reducing overall health risks in drinking water. Specific objectives are to:

  • Determine the occurrence, prevalence, and formation potential of various unregulated DBPs, especially HAL7,1 HAN6,2 HAM7,3 and including chloronitramide, which is relatively unknown for many utilities.
  • Optimize treatment and operational strategies for minimization and control of both regulated and unregulated DBPs in a variety of water matrices with a range of bromide concentrations throughout the treatment train and distribution system.
  • Understand the relative toxicities of various DBPs in order to minimize the overall health risks while complying with regulations.
