Grant
5364 - Prioritization and Validation Methods for Microplastic Analysis in Drinking Water
Grant Information
Project Objectives
- Identify candidate analytical methods (e.g., Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy [FTIR], Raman Spectroscopy, pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry [Py-GCMS]) currently under consideration by regulatory agencies for microplastics analysis in drinking water.
- Conduct an inter-laboratory study to evaluate performance across multiple laboratories using standardized protocols and drinking water samples, including treated and untreated water. Assessment will include:
-- Capability: Ability to characterize microplastics by count, size distribution, shape, polymer type, and mass/concentration
-- Accuracy: Alignment of results with known reference materials
-- Precision: Intra- and inter-lab variability
-- Detection limits: Minimum detectable levels for each method
- Evaluate feasibility and cost-effectiveness of each method for routine utility monitoring, considering factors such as complexity, capital and operational costs, and turnaround time.
- Prioritize the most reliable and practical methods for potential regulatory and utility adoption based on findings from the inter-laboratory study and economic evaluation.
